Saturna Island Hub & Spoke 2025

You need to login in order to sign up for this ride. ‐‐ Registration opens Wed, 8 Jan 2025 5:00 PM

Ride Description:

Please join us for a different Hub & Spoke, on stunning Saturna Island, the least populated and least visited of BC’s Gulf Islands; it’s located at their southern tip. Saturna boasts a vineyard and winery, terrestrial whale watching, ridge hikes with spectacular views and more. The Island is 65% protected park land.

This Hub & Spoke offers daily options of cycling, hiking and kayaking over four days. Your choice.

“Come From Away”: Please note that this H&S is intended to show our beautiful island to club members from outside the immediate Victoria area. As such, our friends from away will have sign-up priority during the lottery period. It may be opened to Victoria members after the lottery period if space and lodging is available.

Bike Rides: There will be one bike ride each day with a leader. We’ll start on arrival-day with a mid-afternoon get-acquainted ride around Saturna’s west end where we’ll be staying; ride departure time will depend on the springtime ferry schedule. The following days’ rides will take us to East Point at the eastern tip of Saturna, where we may see orcas, humpbacks and porpoises. Then to nearby Mayne Island by ferry for an island circuit, visiting Georgina lighthouse, the local brewery and Mayne’s famous Japanese garden if time permits. The fourth ride is a bike/hike to Parks Canada’s Narvaez Bay on Saturna where we’ll ride to the parking lot, hike down to the water, then up to a lookout over Boundary Pass, the designated border between Canada and the USA.
The rides are not long (37, 38 & 18km), but you need to know that they do involve a few decent climbs of 15-18% grades.

Hikes: The hikes range from moderate to advanced, short to long, along ridges with spectacular views of the Gulf & San Juan Islands or in deep forest but also with fine vistas. Half-day or full-day with picnics or lunch at a vineyard bistro. Guided, of course. Hike selection will depend on weather & interest. Bring appropriate footwear, please!

Kayaking: Saturna is a kayaker’s dream! There will be many paddling options depending on weather, tidal currents, interest and ability. Bring your own boat or rent on Saturna. Lessons are another option. Kayak rentals/lessons: 1-604-725-8897, www.kayakingskills.com. One of the H&S co-leaders will be leading our paddles. Paddles may be a full day, short, or even an evening paddle after another activity. SUPs as well as a row boat are available for use. Of course, there is also the ocean for swimming and your hosts will point you to the best beaches.

Accommodation Reservations:

Recommended are three locations within ten cycling minutes of each other and the Lyall Harbour ferry terminal. The leaders have visited all the suggested options & spoken with the owners; each is reserving space for our group.

Once the leaders have established a “Go List” they will review the mix (couples/singles/campers/etc) for compatibility with accommodations listed below. If need be, there are other accommodation options that could be added.  Please don’t try to book accommodation until the review is completed, after which riders will be requested to make reservations directly with the facilities as soon as possible but not later than 28 Feb. Mention that you are with CCCTS cycling group.

Saturna Lodge—This beautiful facility will serve as our Hub. Group breakfasts & meetings will be here. We have reserved the entire lodge (7 rooms) which gives us total use of two common rooms, bar, kitchen, gardens and decks. If we only rent five rooms, the facility will still be closed to “outsiders” and we’ll have full private use of the facilities. $179-$199 per room per night, including breakfast, plus tax. Call co-leader Allen Olsen to coordinate reservations for campsite.

Riding Conditions:

The daily rides will be on rural paved roads without shoulders. Caveat: the ride to Narvaez is on a country road with rough surface, but doable and with virtually no traffic. The rides will begin and end at Saturna Lodge. While we hope for sunny spring weather, please come prepared for cooler temperatures and rain. You can expect, on both Saturna and Mayne Islands, undulating terrain plus a few significant grades of 15-18% —no shame in getting out of the saddle.

Good To Know:
• In order to make this week as pleasurable as possible, please let the organizers know from where you hale and your interest in the activity options. Please email info to leader promptly after registering.

Our last ride will be on Friday, May 30, and the Hub and Spoke will end that evening with a farewell dinner. Participants should plan to depart on Saturday, 31 May.

Registration and Participant Selection:

Registration will be on the CCCTS website on the date shown above. Participant selection is done primarily by lottery results, though the leader will make the final decision on who is accepted for the Hub and Spoke. Leader has the option to prioritize up to 30% of the participants. The computerized lottery system will be used if the event is over-subscribed. A $100 payment is required at the time of registration. The lottery signup will run for a week, at which time the leaders will review the results. The selection process will consider the following criteria in evaluating candidates:
 Participants from away will be given priority. Priority may be given to a couple over a single registrant, depending on the numbers of participants relative to the availability of accommodation.

 fitness and riding ability and experience required for the tour.
 a history of demonstrating safe riding practices.
 acceptable social behaviour.
The leader may interview riders or others who know them to verify their suitability for the tour. The coordinators will have the discretion to make the final decision on whether someone is accepted for the event and may reject applicants after discussion with the Hub and Spoke Director. Registration fee payments are considered non-refundable in the event of cancellation. Wait-listed cyclists who don't make it to the Ride's "Go List" are encouraged to remain on the wait list; alternatively, they may request a refund of their registration fee (minus the Stripe fee).

Communicable Illnesses: CCCTS Communicable Illness Policy takes into consideration regulations and recommendations from Public Health Authority of Canada, and BC Centre of Disease Control. In the case of illness while on the H&S, it is expected that all participants will follow the procedures outlined in this policy. Please refer to https://cccts.org/club-document/communicable-illness/ for details on the club’s Communicable Illness Policy. CCCTS strongly encourages all participants to be up to date on their vaccinations for COVID and all other communicable diseases. Everyone should bring three COVID test kits with them on the tour and take responsibility for self-testing if they feel ill. All participants from outside British Columbia must have medical insurance for this trip, including coverage for COVID-related illness.
