  • Tour Participant Numbers: Min. 18, Max. 24.
  • Tour Rating: Intermediate/advanced (see below).
  • Tour Fee: $ 1,450.00 CDN.

Description: The ride has been designed to allow riders who haven’t ridden during the winter, to get themselves into riding shape for summer.  This 17-day/16-night figure-eight tour starts and ends in Sacramento, California, with enjoyable spring rides along the Sacramento and American Rivers and through the California Delta (an expansive inland delta formed by the Sacramento and San Juaquin Rivers) and beautiful gold country. Sacramento’s maximum/minimum daily temperatures are expected to be ~21°C (72°F)/~8°C (46°F) respectively. Little precipitation is expected during the tour [~2.6 cm/mo (~1”)].

It will be a truck-supported tour with motel lodging. It includes eight move days, i.e. the rides between lodging sites, seven non-move days (NMD), and two travel days (April 19th and May 5th).

The Tour follows two clock-wise loops from Sacramento (two nights), to Lodi (two nights), to Vacaville (two nights), back to Sacramento followed with one day in Lincoln, Auburn (two nights), Placerville (two nights), Jackson (three nights), and return to Sacramento (one night). Participants will take turns driving the truck, laying out lunches, and arranging “happy-hour” refreshments/condiments.

Riding Conditions and Logistics: The tour is designed as an “intermediate” tour for the first (7) days to allow riders who have not ridden during the winter to get back their cycling fitness.  There is no climbing during the first week unless desired.  The second portion of the trip is rated “advanced” because the moves have more climbing (See “CCCTS Tours” section in this Newsbrief for tour classification information). The vehicle is for transporting luggage (bags weighing 18kg or less), food stuffs, drinks, etc., and for the transport of either ill cyclists or those with mal-functioning bicycles. The longest ride is the last days, which will be 110 km (66 mi) with ~600 m (2,000’) of elevation gain. In general, the rides will vary from flat (7 days) to hilly with the option for more climbing on NMD, where a range of rides will be offered. The Tour’s minimum total cycling distance will be ~824 km (515mi), all on paved roads.

Tour fees cover the costs of accommodations, breakfasts (included with room registration), bag lunches and the Tour Leader’s remuneration of 5% of tour costs to a maximum of one tour fee and his pre-tour reconnaissance costs. The fee does not cover pre-/post-travel costs to/from Sacramento, dinners, parking fees ($9.00 per day at the Holiday Inn), and other personal costs.

Registration and Participant Selection: Registration opens Wednesday, December 11th at 1700h PST (5:00 p.m.), and is accomplished on-line http://tinyurl.com/m9dw6g) for a cost of $2.00 (non-refundable). Participant selection will follow the “CCCTS Tour Participant Selection Policy and Procedures”: Successful applicants will be CCCTS members selected on the basis of date-of-receipt of registration; their fitness, health and cycling skills in relation to the Tour’s “intermediate/advanced” rating; and, on rooming arrangements (double occupancy couples or same sex roommates unless otherwise agreed to). Within 48 hours of an applicant’s acceptance, the Tour Leader will contact participants by phone or E-mail. Successful applicants will have 72 hours to make their first deposit ($750.00), on-line http://tinyurl.com/m9dw6g); the final payment ($700.00) will be paid on-line by March 1st. Those canceling the Tour will incur costs made or committed on their behalf unless vacancies are filled.

Queries regarding cycling ability in relation to health and safety should be directed to the Tour Leader (you can request, via E-mail, that he call you). Once the tour is full, applicants may join the wait list at no charge: They will inform the Tour Leader, however, when they no longer wish to be considered for the Tour.
