Buckley Bay
A nice, sunny but breezy day today for our trip out to Buckley Bay. 25 members enjoyed the ride. Thanks to Ed & Barb for coordinating. Next week week we renew acquaintances with Cumberland and Comox Lake.
19 riders came out today and most of were over dressed for what turned out to be a beautiful, warm October day! It was a Choose-a-Ride and 2 groups met at the Wandering Moose in Cumberland for coffee. One group rode Dove Creek and along the Inland Highway at pace, while the other group took a more relaxed and direct route to Cumberland. A few souls also rode out to Comox lake.
Cancelled…a miserable day! 🙁 🙁
Well, the weather forecast perhaps concerned a few, but 10 riders met at Filberg Centre for the ride along Condensory, Cessford, Piercy and Hwy 19, to Cumberland. Mystery Man, Steve, magically appeared in the group part way. Weather was dry but a few droplets of rain were noticeable as we arrived at the Wandering Moose. While we were enjoying our coffee and treats, it did rain a bit as the streets were wet for our return, but again, only the occasional rain drop was felt. Good to fit in this ride as the rain came later in the day. Thanks to Andrea for Coordinating.
A beautiful, blue sky day today, which was not the case in most parts of BC where smoke from the numerous wild fires has created some very unhealthy conditions around the province. Today’s ride was a short 40 km jaunt along HQ, Smith, 19A, Husband, Waveland, Eleanor, Wilkinson, Astra, Kilmorley, Little River, Military Road and Knight Road to the Airport for coffee. 22 riders broke into 2 groups to complete the ride. Special welcome to Lee and Allen, new from Campbell River and former neighbours of Steve FA in South Surrey. Also a big welcome to Steve Ray and Kathleen Slater who joined us for the day….and hopefully in the future. A big thanks to Steve FA for coordinating the ride.
Two rides today:
Choose a Ride to Buckley Bay where 8 hardy cyclists, joined by Stella along the way, battled the heat elements for the appx 45 km return traverse from Filberg Lodge along 19A Oceanside, succeeding through the ever ready leadership of Steve Allen, arriving at the Buckly Bay coffee shop just in time to see John and Evelyn who had arrived just prior along the Inland Highway.
The trip, collegiality, coffee and overall cycle was made particularly pleasant due to the location allowing us a shady return to Courtenay environs along the west side of 19A.!
Buttle Lake/Myra Falls
10 people left from Elk Portal and cycled to Myra Falls and back…about 75 km. Starting temperature was 19c and the ride to the mine was very comfortable. Returning was a different story and by the time they got back to the parking lot it was 35c. The last 15 km was brutal….even the wind was hot! A number of people stopped on the way back and cooled off in the lake. Thanks to Rhonda for coordinating.
Warmest day of the year, 32 degrees, made for a change of original plans for a ride to Qualicum. Instead, the 19 riders who met at 9AM at the Filberg Centre, chose to make their way to Buckley Bay for some vigorous socializing. There was a hint of smoke in the air, apparently from Siberia, but this was not unbearable and everybody enjoyed the ride and were back home before the extreme heat of the afternoon.
11 riders went to Quadra where they stopped at the Southend Farm Winery and then had lunch at the Heriot Bay Inn. Thanks to Garry & Brenda for coordinating.
6 riders met at the Filberg Centre for the “Choose a Ride” and rode out HQ, Howard, Williams Beach Road with a stop at the Miniature Golf for an ice cream before a quick ride back.
