Ride Description:

Join us for a week of cross-country skiing at Silver Star resort,  known for its early snow and its excellent network of groomed trails

Silver Star is located just outside Vernon B.C., in the interior of B.C.

Participants from out of town can fly into the Kelowna Airport which is served by Westjet and Air Canada. From there, it is a 1-hour drive to the resort.  You can either arrange a shuttle (https://kelownaconcierge.ca/silverstarshuttle) to the ski hill or rent a car.  Once you are at the resort you will be able to walk or ski to the trails.

Ski rentals can be arranged through the Village Rental Shop at Silver Star – check with the store for pricing and availability.  https://www.skisilverstar.com/things-to-do/mountain-dining-shopping/gear-gifts-souvenirs/village-rental-shop

Communicable Illness Information:

CCCTS riding guidelines including applicable Covid and communicable illness guidelines will apply.  See the CCCTS website for current guidelines.

All participants from outside Canada must have out-of-country medical insurance for this trip, including coverage for COVID-related illness.

Accommodation Reservations:

Creekside condos can be seen on the left side of this picture in the far distance.

Each participant is responsible for making their own hotel reservations. Participants can make their reservations through www.silverstarstays.com or through other on-line booking platforms.

Our base for happy hours and group gatherings will be the Creekside Condos, located in the Silver Star Village.  We recommend that participants stay in one of the many condos in this part of the resort – these include both one-bedroom and two-bedroom condos each with its own kitchen.  Prices for a one-bedroom unit range from Cdn. $1500 to $2000 per week.  Make sure to ask for the discounted rate – 7 nights for the price of 6.  There are also two-bedroom units for approximately $2000-2500 as well as many larger multi-room vacation homes should people wish to share.  More information will be available following the lottery.

NOTE:  Silver Star Stays has strict deposit and cancellation policies.  A 30% deposit is due at time of booking, and the balance is payable in full 30 days before your arrival.  These payments are strictly non-refundable, including for reasons related to weather, road conditions, illness and missed flights.  Trip cancellation insurance is recommended.

The Creekside condos make an excellent gathering spot for group activities, with an outdoor hot tub and a common room with bookshelves, games area and a cozy gathering spot with fireplace.

The main village is a five-minute walk from the condos, and offers a number of restaurants, should participants choose to eat out.  The condos have kitchens for those who prefer to do their own cooking, and there is a small grocery store in the village where basics may be purchased, or you may wish to stock up at a larger grocery store in Vernon on the way to the mountain.

Riding Conditions:

This will be a very informal “do your own thing” CCCTS hub and spoke.  Come for a few days, or come for longer – it’s up to you.

In terms of cross-country skiing, there are a variety of different trails to choose from each day, depending on your comfort level, trail conditions and weather.   Unlike many of our bike tours, there will be no “guided” group ski outings; rather, it is expected that participants will form their own small groups to ski together, and that participants with knowledge of the trails will offer route suggestions.

The network boasts 55 km of trails, all groomed daily for both classic and skate-skiing.  In addition to the Silver Star network, we will have access to an additional 50 km of groomed trails at the Sovereign network, which you can ski to or drive to.  Both networks have cabins where we can warm up and have a bite to eat.

A ski pass is required for the trails at Silver Star.  It can be purchased on-site; 2023/24 price is $25/day.  Should participants wish to ski at Sovereign, there is a separate fee that must be paid there.

While Silver Star is known for its early season snow, nothing is guaranteed anymore, so be prepared for some early winter hiking as a back-up activity e.g. hiking poles and spikes for your boots.

Fee Includes:

The Cdn. $50 fee will cover the organizational costs and supplies, and some happy hour snacks.

Fee Does Not Include:

Accommodation, meals, ski rental, ski passes, or individual expenses of participants.

Hub and Spoke Coordinator Fee (waived)

Itinerary:

Tuesday Dec. 3, 2024

5:00 pm:  Meet and greet at Silver Star (location TBD).  Garry Esau and Dianne White, CCCTS club members and part-time residents of Silver Star, will join us to share their local knowledge and provide route suggestions.

Wednesday Dec. 4 to Tuesday Dec. 10

Each day we will have the opportunity to head out onto the trails for a ski or other activity.  We will have our last group happy hour after skiing on Monday Dec. 9, and head home on Tuesday Dec. 10.

Registration and Participant Selection:

Registration will be on the CCCTS website on the date shown. A computerized lottery system and waitlist will be utilized in the event that the ride is over-subscribed.  A $50 CAD payment is required at the time of registration. The lottery signup will run for a week, after which time the leader will review the results.

The leader will notify registrants of their selection status. If the ride is not filled to capacity, registration will continue until the closing dates shown. Registration Fee payments are considered non-refundable in the event of cancellation. Wait listed cyclists who don't make it to the Ride's "Go List" are encouraged to remain on the waitlist; alternatively, they may request a refund of their registration fee (minus the stipe fee).
