2025 Tour Season is Underway

The 2025 season of CCCTS tours has begun and our first International tour is underway as we speak! A small group of 7 club members, including my husband, are currently “pilgrims” walking the Camino Primitivo route in Spain. The Primitivo is the original Camino route and considered to be the most difficult. Their leader, Beverly Wagner, is a highly experienced Camino walker and has been doing a different route for many years now. We certainly hope they are having good weather and a great time.

The next International tour to head out will be the Slovenia tour in May, with leader Bonita Douglas. Our favorite European tour operator – Sitnica and Alen Augustin, who are based in Croatia – will be guiding the group. Slovenia is indeed a lovely country and I can say that with confidence since I did this tour in 2024. The group will enjoy visiting wineries, castles, historic cities in both Slovenia and Croatia, and great food that comes from the mixed Slavic and Mediterranean cultures.

Next up is the Croatia tour with two of our favorite Ottawans, Marg Hurley and Peter Wood, as leaders. Sitnica is the tour operator again and there is no country that Alen knows better since it is his home country. The tour will visit Istria and the ancient hill town of Motovun, hug the Dalmatian coast, and island-hop down to end up in Dubrovnik. Wealthy Romans used to vacation in the Roman province of Dalmatia and the emperor Diocletian retired to his palace in Split, the city of his birthplace. One thing you can say about the Romans is that they always knew a good location when they saw it and they tended to conquer them in order to have them for their own enjoyment.

We’ve got several more International tours this summer and fall and you can see the full list at the end of this article. Please note that there is still space available on the Ultimate Vietnam and Northern and Central Thailand tours.

Update on Cross Canada, Section 1 – 2026 Vancouver to Winnipeg – August/September

Beverly Wagner and I have been making progress with planning the Cross Canada, Part 1 – 2026 Vancouver to Winnipeg tour. We now have the route laid out and a tentative daily itinerary for this 6-week camping tour. The plan is to camp about 5 nights a week and stay in a hotel for 2 nights, with a day off every week. Daily cycling distances will average between 70 to 80k, though there will be some long days due to a lack of campgrounds. This will be a “kinder and gentler” sort of Cross Canada tour than past tours, which is why we are breaking it up into three parts. Five of us will head out to scout the route and the campgrounds this spring. I’ll be covering Vancouver to Drumheller. Danielle Amerongen and Rachel Champagne from Edmonton have kindly volunteered to scout Drumheller to Regina, and Bill and Charlotte Eberlein volunteered to scout Regina to Winnipeg. It takes “a village of volunteers” to make this club and all its rides and activities go. We hope to end up with the best route and campgrounds that we can by going the extra distance with this scouting effort.

Along the lines of volunteerism, once the tour is posted, we will be looking for a couple more volunteers. We will need:

Tour Driver – Drive the support truck and grocery shop for half of the days of the tour. Receive a 50% discount on your tour fee plus your expenses to drive the truck back to Vancouver.

Tour Treasurer – Handle the tour funds, keep track of tour expenses, and make sure we stick to our budget. Receive a 50% discount on your tour fee.

Hopefully, the tour will be ready for posting to the website by the end of the summer.

Tour Postings

Details for each tour will be posted when tour proposals and budgets are finalized and have been approved by the Board. This list in the Newsbrief is meant to give you a heads-up for your travel planning purposes until the final tour details are ready for publication. So, please watch your CCCTS emails and the website since tours will be posted one at a time as they are ready; all members will be notified via email when a new tour posts. Tour plans are always changing; as of today, this is the best information we have on the tours that will be offered for the 2025 season and some initial ideas for the 2026 season.

How the Legacy Program started

CCCTS Legacy Program – it’s about helping people enjoy safe cycling in our communities.

How the Legacy Program started

CCCTS accumulated funds over and above the operating budget requirements through casino revenues of long ago, good stewardship of operating funds and from a substantial bequest in 2017 from the estate of a former club member, Audrey Hayes. Audrey was a South Delta resident who appreciated the cycling opportunities the club volunteers organized for active older adults. Her bequest gave the club to opportunity to help people of all ages and abilities to enjoy safe cycling.

“The bicycle is a simple solution to some of the world’s most complicated problems.”

A quote from Sir Mark Beaumont an adventurer and accomplished long distant cyclist

We’ve supported club & community initiatives $46,240

Since 2018, CCCTS has provided funding to several organizations for cycling programs and initiatives and to four Chapters for volunteer training and member education. 84% of the funding has gone to community organizations.

One time funding recipients include:

BC Cycling Coalition – $10,000 to advocate for changes to the BC Motor Vehicle Act

Whistler Adapted Sports Program – $2,500 so that adults with spinal cord injuries could experience adaptive mountain biking

  • HUB – $2,500 funding assistance towards an 8 week bike skill and community mapping program for children in the Katzie First Nation

Long term funding for organizations with strong connections to our club:

Santa’s Workshop Comox and Helping With Bikes:

These two organizations have received funding over a number of years. CCCTS members Garry Olinek in the Comox Valley and Chris Taylor in the National Capital Region are volunteers who spend countless hours fundraising, organizing the bike repair workshops and reconditioning donated bikes.

Santa’s Workshop Comox Valley

How Santa’s Workshop started

Two brothers, Bruce and Harry White owned a welding shop in the Comox Valley. In the late 1950’s while unloading their scrap metal at the dump they noticed some bicycles that looked repairable, so thinking it was a shame to see them go to waste, they took the bikes back to the shop to repair with the idea to give them to children in need. This was the beginning of Santa’s Workshop. Friends helped out repairing bikes and toys for distribution and the program grew! This organization will celebrate it’s 67th year in 2025 and it takes many donors and volunteers make this program happen. Click on this link to watch a CHEK news report: Santa’s Workshop in Courtenay will provide gifts for hundreds of kids this year

Vacant commercial space is provided November through December

each year for the refurbishing of toys and bikes

What the organization does

Santa’s Workshop sets up shop in November each year and Garry and a team of about 12 volunteers rebuild over 200 bikes in a very short period of time. Every bike is rebuilt and brought back to “near new” condition. Santa’s Workshop 2022r3.mp4 – Google Drive

Every year the club provides funding to Santa’s Workshop so that each bike found under the Christmas Tree comes with a helmet. With CCCTS money in hand, hardworking volunteer, Garry Olinek was able to partner with the local Canadian Tire to subsidize the purchase of, as well as donate additional helmets.

Every child receives a new helmet with their bike. If parents need help with fitting the helmet,

they are encouraged to head to their local bike stores for assistance.

How CCCTS has helped

In 2018 Garry was speaking with Wilf Craats (former Chapter treasurer) about a couple of some areas Santa’s Workshop could use some help. They shared tools amongst the 12 volunteers and needed a compressor and bike stand. Wilf suggested the Chapter apply for funding from the newly created Legacy Program. Santa’s Workshop has received funding from our club every year since then and the funds have gone towards the purchase of helmets and the equipment required to recondition the bikes. The continued support has made it easier for Santa’s Workshop volunteers to build relationships with local businesses to donate toys, helmets, tools and supplies at a deeply discounted price.

Helping with Bikes in the National Capital Region

How the HWB started

Chris Taylor founded the Helping With Bikes, a division of Helping with Furniture 11 years ago after he retired from the federal public service. Since 2014 a small dedicated team of volunteer mechanics have refurbished and given out more than 3,000 bikes to their neighbours who could not otherwise afford the joy and utility of owning a bike.

This organization not only ensures many good bikes stay on the road, it diverts a mountain of waste from going to landfill and other carbon-intensive recycling. One refurbished bike uses parts from three bikes destined for the scrap heap! Give Bikes — Helping with Furniture – Aidons avec des meubles

Chris in the HWB Workshop. He is a current member of CCCTS and participates

in local rides and social events in the National Capital Region.

What the organization does

Helping With Bikes does so much more than rebuild bikes! Their intrepid gang of mechanics also spend time outside their shop raising funds directly by doing bike tune ups and safety checks at community events, such as at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. Occasionally, a bike of high vintage value to collectors is donated to them, and because they are generally unsuited to their clients, the bikes are refurbished and sold as a further source of funds to keep HWB going.

They also receive support from a wide range of individuals in the form of cash donations, and from businesses and organizations such the City of Ottawa who now provides them with helmets for every bike as part of a sports brain injury prevention initiative. A local bike shop helps with a supply of affordable locks and other accessories and a local craft brewer hosts a “bike drive” every spring that helps insure HWB have a steady supply of bikes. Another charitable organization that helps support disadvantaged youth has also supported HWB with small grants to help with safety gear such as reflectors and bells.

t

HWB volunteer mechanics work on bikes year round when their schedule allows. They’re

often working on their own, picking up the tools where the last mechanic left off.

How CCCTS has helped

Initially, the club provided funds so HWB could supply a helmet and lock for each bike. As more donors came on board, our contribution of $8,500 has been used for the purchase of equipment and supplies needed to refurbish bicycles. In the last 5 years, these dedicated mechanics have given on average 275 bicycles to their neighbours each year.

Legacy Funding Commitment 2015 – 2017

CCCTS has committed to funding Santa’s Workshop and Helping With Bikes, providing the club continues to have sufficient funds in reserve to do so. The amount of this commitment totals $4950 for each organization.

It has been my pleasure to work with all of these organizations over the years, but in particular Garry Olinek and Chris Taylor. Their passion and dedication of getting bikes to people who need them is inspiring.

Ask Richard: Bike Tech Talk

Question: Hi Richard. I use RWGPS for solo and CCCTS group rides. I know that for leaders it is particularly important to get all the turns right. How can I ensure that I am getting the notification for turns at the best time for me to be prepared, whether on my own or in a group?

Answer: Riding a route and missed a turn or turning too early? You’re not alone. Many leaders and experienced riders prefer to have their device mounted on their handlebars so they can see the map and know exactly where the turns are located. Thus, when they hear a turn-by-turn indicator they can glance down and verify exactly where the turn is indicated (not the street before and not the street after!).

Turn-by-turn alerts themselves can be life-savers, but many riders don’t realize these cues can be tweaked for better timing. Here’s how it works on the Ride with GPS (RWGPS) app on a phone and Garmin devices.

RWGPS App on a phone gives you voice and visual turn cues while navigating. You can choose how early you get those alerts:

  • Settings > Navigation > Alert Distance
    • Normal: About 30–45 m before a turn
    • Early: about 75–90 m before a turn

Here is a tip: Use Early if you’re riding fast, descending, or tend to miss short-notice cues. Be aware that the warning of a coming turn (possibly 40 more pedal strokes) may not be the next intersection; it could be one or more blocks more if you are in a town or city.

Also note that you can set advanced cue warnings that will announce the next turn as soon as you have completed the last turn. That gives you extra time to be prepared.

For Garmin Devices (e.g., Edge 530, 830, 1030, 1040)

RWGPS routes can be synced via Garmin Connect or loaded as TCX/GPX files. Turn alerts are handled by the Garmin unit, and while you can’t set a specific distance in the device:

  • Garmin usually gives cues about 100–150 m ahead.
  • Depending on your Garmin model, you can enable:
    • Visual alerts (map and text). Go to Activity Profile, Navigation, Map, and set Guide Text When Navigating to ON.
    • Audio beeps or vibration
    • “Distance to Next” field on one of your map or data pages for better situational awareness

For more precise custom alert distance setting:

If you have a special requirement to set an exact alert distance, you can do this from a computer. Bring up the route you want to export to your GPS device such as Garmin. Where it says “Export FIT file” click on the three dots and the More Options. You will see several formats for export (.FIT or .TCX course both work well) and a slider to give an exact distance for cue warnings (range is 5 – 100 m). Export the file to the download area of the computer and then transfer it by wire to your device.

Summary: For phone users, set Alert Distance to “Early” if you need more time. Set advanced cue warning to tell you the next cue distance right after you complete every cue. For Garmin users, familiarize yourself with the cue system on your unit—and consider using the “Distance to Next” field on your data screen. Having the screen available on your handlebars with all devices is always a good idea.

Breaking News: Do you keep the RWGPS app up-to-date on your phone? For the iPhone, RWGPS has a new version (3.9.0) as of April 19th. They fixed a bug in the delivery of routes from computer to the phone app for many of us. There should be a recent update for Android phones as well.

Thanks for reading! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I will respond as quickly as possible and may also use your question as part of a later column.
