CUSTOM TOUR FOR 24DAYS/23NIGHTS
Chiang Mai- Bangkok

This is a Thailand bike tour for the ages. Quite literally, as we trace the routes shaped by Siamese kingdom builders over millennia and delve deep into the diverse cultural fabric of modern Thailand, from small hill tribe villages in the northern highlands to the skyscrapers of Bangkok. Over 24 exhilarating days, we leave no stone unturned as we discover the rich heritage and natural beauty of the “Land of Smiles”.

Starting in Chiang Mai, we warm up in the flat plains surrounding the Ping River before venturing into the hilly terrain of northern Thailand. We ride along forest trails, visit the sacred Chiang Dao Caves, and unwind at a riverside hotel by the Mae Kok River. Next, we weave through hill tribe country to reach Chiang Rai and visit the famed Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge at the Mekong River’s confluence. Climbing to the peak of Phu Chi Fah offers breathtaking views over mist-shrouded valleys, followed by an exhilarating downhill into the rice-paddy-covered plains of Phayao Province. We explore a string of northern heritage towns, renowned for their Buddhist temples and teak trading heritage. Our journey continues into the heartland of Thailand’s first kingdom, Sukhothai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich assemblage of temple ruins. As we head south through the valley of the Phetchabun Mountain Range, we encounter rice fields alongside cabbage and corn plantations before reaching Khao Yai National Park, home to wild elephants. Our final days take us across the Central Plains, through farmlands, rice paddies, villages, and canals. The tour ends with a short transfer to Bangkok.

Accommodation Reservations:

Hotels are a selection of 3- and 4-star hotels with the exception of Chiang Mai where we stay at an elegant 5-star hotel in the old town. Most of the hotels are character-rich and cozy with good facilities and the creature comforts needed by hard-working cyclists.

Riding Conditions:

We cycle a total of around 1,150 KM. The average daily riding distance is around 60 km. We have three rest days. The northern part of Thailand is mountainous, so expect steady undulations and a few steep climbs, balanced by refreshing downhill stretches. Once we reach Sukhothai, the terrain becomes predominantly flat, though you can still expect some rolling hills and gentle passes as we cycle south along the foothills of the Phetchabun Range. For those seeking a challenge, there’s an optional climb of nearly 1,000 m over approximately 30 km in Khao Yai National Park — truly a badge of honor for any cyclist in Thailand! Our rides include a mix of paved roads in varying conditions. You can expect mostly smooth tarmac interspersed with narrow village roads and country lanes which can contain potholes, road debris, and gravel. Although much of the route is on quiet countryside roads with minimal traffic, we will regularly share the roads with cars, motorbikes, and buses. There are a few unavoidable sections along the main roads, especially coming in and out of cities and near popular attractions. On several days we have vehicle transfers before and/or after our rides – this keeps the distances manageable and avoids some of the busiest stretches of main roads. Late November and early December mark the beginning of the dry and cool season in Thailand, but take that with a grain of salt as daytime temperatures still feel hot and the occasional rain shower may occur. We generally ride rain or shine, but based on the guide’s discretion or your comfort level, modifications to the planned route can be made. It’s all part of the adventure!

This tour is fully vehicle-supported. If you are feeling tired or the weather is inclement, you can always take a ride in the support van.  RWGPS routes will be provided.

Thailand at its best! We’ll ride around 65 km and then jump into the support van to complete
the rest of the distance to our countryside retreat in the district of Chiang Klang, located in the valley of the Nan River. Before arriving at the hotel, we’ll make a stop at Taat Maan

roads and views over rice paddies, fruit orchards, and small villages. The last stretch has
some gradual gradients and, once we reach the district of Wiang Sa, we’ll hop in the support

history either by bike or with a buggy service at Sukhothai Historical Park. Discover the
Khmer-style Wat Sri Sawai, built in the 11th-12th centuries, which predates the city’s founding.
Visit the golden-era temples of Wat Mahathat, Wat Sra Sri, and Wat Trapang Ngoen. And

World Heritage Sites: Sri Thep Historical Park. The ruins of this ancient city, belonging to the
Dvaravati civilisation pre-dating the arrival of the Thais, offers a fascinating glimpse into the
country’s deep past. After some time exploring here we’ll transfer another hour to our cycling
start point near the Pasak Chonlasit Dam. We ride around 40 km alongside this beautiful
reservoir and then cross through the heavily forested area of Chet Sao Noi National Park. The
terrain gets a little more hilly here and we rise to higher ground for a stay at a backcountry
resort in the province of Saraburi.

Before us lies Thailand’s third largest national park, Khao Yai. Made up primarily of dense
forests upon an undulating landscape of hills, when looked at from a distance, the area
appears as one green mass rising majestically out of the Central Plains. Hence the name
Khao Yai, which translates to “Big Mountain”. Today’s ride will take us along the northeastern
edge of the National Park, riding through the agricultural district of Pak Chong. A highlight is
cycling past the country’s premier wine growing region, making for an interesting and
perhaps unexpected visual shift! We spend the night at a lovely hotel just beyond the frontier

National Park for some light trekking. The area is home to many waterfalls and other natural
gems, though its richest possession is the diversity of wildlife and flora living within. Bears,
gibbons, elephants, hornbills, endangered species of reptiles, and many more animals call
this vast landscape home. If you are lucky, you may spot some of them.

the entry gate to the top, we will gain over 1,000 m while covering nearly 40 km. Expect a
succession of long uphill drags, followed by some roller-coaster-like dips, and, as we
approach the final few kilometers to the top, we encounter double-digit gradients, beautiful
hairpins and open sections. While the climb is certainly a test of endurance, the road is in a
tight embrace of fresh tropical foliage, making for a distinctive and enjoyable cycling
challenge. Once we have reached the highest point we will take a breather while soaking in
the expansive views over the jungle, valleys and plains below. From there it is a gradual
descent down to the other side and to our hotel on the western side of the park in Prachinburi
