Description: This 15-day/14-night clockwise tour starts and ends in Cranbrook, BC, with rides into the famous Waterton Lakes and Glacier National Parks. The “Going to the Sun Road” (named for “Going to the Sun Mountain”) has long been on road cyclist’s bucket list – and along with this amazing road (both a “National Historic Landmark” and a “Historic Civil Engineering Landmark”), with its weeping wall, tunnels and spectacular views, we will also be touring other beautiful areas in these Parks. As well, we will have, for those interested, the opportunity to ride the “Going to the Sun Road” in both directions; and, for the hikers there will be a range of hikes to choose from on each “Non Move Day” (for definition, see immediately below).
It is a truck-supported tour with motel lodging. It includes nine move days, i.e. the rides between lodging sites, four non-move days (NMD), and two travel days (July 13th and July 27th). The Tour will follow a clock-wise loop; in BC from Cranbrook, to Fernie, and then into Alberta (Pincher Creek), back to BC (Waterton Lakes), into Montana (Many Glaciers, St Mary, Lake McDonald, Whitefish, and Eureka) and back to Cranbrook.
Participants will take turns driving the truck, laying out lunches, and arranging “happy-hour” refreshments / condiments.
Riding Conditions and Logistics: The tour is designated an “Advanced” tour based on the length of the rides – two 71+mi (114+km) days. (For tour classification information See “CCCTS Tours” section in this Newsbrief). The vehicle is for transporting luggage, food stuffs and drinks, etc., and for the transport of either ill cyclists or those with mal-functioning bicycles.
Weather conditions in Whitefish ranges from 10°C – 27°C (50°F – 80°F), and average precipitation is 1.7″ (4.3cm). Temperatures will be lower in the mountains and the precipitation will be greater.
Tour fees include accommodations (double occupancy), two breakfasts (included with room registration), bag lunches, and the Tour Leader’s remuneration of 5% of tour costs to a maximum of one Tour fee and his pre-tour reconnaissance costs. The fee does not cover participant’s pre-/post-travel costs to/from Cranbrook, BC, dinners, and any other personal costs.
