This 13-day, 12-night, van supported tour starts just west of Portland, Oregon in Forest Grove. On Day 2 the tour will commence with a short ride to Vernonia. The next day will see us undertake one of the 2 long rides on this trip: a 90-km ride from Vernonia along the Banks-Vernonia Trail on to the coast at Seaside. Over the next few days we will cycle the Oregon Coast, with stops in Tillamook, Lincoln City, Newport and Florence.
From Florence we will cycle inland to Eugene, our second challenging ride, some 105 km. Then we will start the Williamette Valley Scenic Bikeway from Eugene to McMinnville, with stops in Corvallis and Salem, before returning to Forest Grove for our last night. Total distance on this trip will be 775 km over the 11 riding days of the tour, an average of 70 km /day. The total ascent on the tour is 6,400 m an average of 580m/ day. Detailed daily route maps and cue sheets with elevation profiles and road condition information will be provided at the commencement of the tour. GPS data will also be available.
There will be a support vehicle provided for the tour participants, driven by volunteers from the group. This may provide an opportunity for those who chose to have a rest day by volunteering to drive the van for the day. The van is intended for baggage hauling and may be used as a sag wagon only for riders affected by illness or injury or an inoperative bike. Note that there is one rest day scheduled on this tour, and there are a few days of short distances with opportunities for other activities.
Accommodations will be typically in motels along the route, based on 2 persons per room; couples or same gender singles. Several of the McMenamin’s historic hotels are used for this trip. There will be one “glamping” stay in Vernonia (yurts or tents with beds provided for 2 persons per yurt).
The route follows country roads, with much of the coastal route along Highway 101, where there is generally a reasonable shoulder. There are a number of tunnels on the route, albeit with cyclist activated lights to warn drivers. The maximum grades are normally less than 8%. There are 2 challenging days where the coast range is crossed; Day 3 is 86km/ 1080m ascent and Day 8 is 105km/ 1255m. The route along the coast is also moderately hilly; see the ascent measurements provided on the itinerary.
The Willamette Valley route is generally quite flat. The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is a State designation and follows a route on rural roads well suited to cycling and showcases farming country and wineries.
The tour fee includes vehicle rental and expenses, accommodations for 13 nights and some breakfasts where provided, happy hour snacks, maps and cue sheets. Tour leader compensation is included in the tour fee, in accordance with the latest CCCTS policy, as well as a 15% contingency allowance. Free parking for up to 8 cars at the Forest Grove hotel for the duration of the tour is provided. Any surplus funds remaining after the tour will be distributed to the participants.
Costs not included are transportation to and from the start and finish point, nor the supply of bikes or meals, except where noted.

The lottery signup will run for 3 days, after which time a wait list is automatically generated and the leaders will review the results.
- The fitness and riding experience of registrants will be considered in terms of suitability for the tour, and the leader may elect to contact registrants or others who know them to verify their suitability. The leader will contact those who have been selected and direct them to make the first payment of $US 600 on the website within approximately 1 week from the close of the lottery. Deposits are non-refundable unless a registrant is not selected or does not wish to be held on the wait list.
- If the ride is not filled to capacity, registration will still be allowed up until the registration close date shown above.
- Payments are non-refundable in the event of participant canceling unless a replacement person(s) are found.
