Merville (2016-10-07)

Merville

A hardy group of 8 riders showed up after a night of heavy rain and power outages for what turned out to be a pleasant ride to the Merville General Store where they got into the Thanksgiving spirit (see attached picture)! Weather was very nice considering the day before and, apparently the next day. Two more scheduled rides for this season.

Black Creek (2016-09-16)

Black Creek

A group of 11 riders met today for a ride to Black Creek.  Due to construction on HWY 19, the A Group changed their route to go via Headquarters, Rennisson, Husband, Waveland, Coleman and then back for a total of around 50km.  The # 1 group took a shorter route up to Howard Road, then, due to the deteriorating weather conditions, turned back and stopped at the Merville General store where they enjoyed the Thanksgiving Scene and some treats before riding back into Courtenay in the rain!

Comox Lake (2016-09-09)

Comox Lake

A group of 17 riders (plus 1 who joined us along the way), our largest group for a few months, met at Filberg Centre for a ride to Comox Lake. The initial route was modified due to road construction and the “A Group” went for a slightly more challenging ride that included some gravel, but, eventually, we all met at the Wandering Moose in Cumberland for a nice lunch in the sunshine….while viewing the construction in the main street!  Ride distance was about 50 km.

Friday September 2, 2016

City Country Loop

On Friday, Sept. 2, a half dozen dedicated riders cycled through town, along the coast and back through the country. Len’s disappearance the week before was explained…an unannounced ice cream stop! And keeping true to form, he vanished again, only to be found waiting for the pack at Merville GS! A good time was had by all!

Deep Bay (2016-08-26)

Deep Bay

A group of 11 cyclists met at the Filberg Centre for the 84 km ride to Deep Bay & back. Glenn led us safely out of town to Buckley Bay where a few riders decided to turn around as the day was a warm one! Seven riders completed the round trip and enjoyed the fish & chips at Deep Bay along with a great view. The route is shown here.

City/Country Loop (2016-08-19)

City Country Loop

A group of 14 riders participated today on perhaps the hottest day of the year. A decision was made to make the ride a bit shorter so we did the Headquarters, Tsolum Rd, Coleman, Waveland route from which people took different routes home ~ 45km, with treats at the Merville General Store. Good to get home a bit earlier before the real heat arrived. Many riders are participating in the YANA charity ride this Sunday….when it should be a bit cooler!   Thanks to Roz for leading the ride.

Buttle Lake (2016-08-12)

Buttle Lake

A smallish group of 6 riders left Elk Portal, west of Campbell River to cycle the 82 km return trip to Myra Falls on Buttle Lake. Fantastic scenery, good road conditions, very light traffic (a vehicle every 10 minutes) and great company made for a fine day. Georgina, who once worked for the mine, gave us an impromptu guided tour of the mine site. We refilled our water bottles at the mine operations office and met a member of the Campbell River Bike club; they will be doing the same ride this Sunday.
The sunshine and warm temperatures took their toll on the average speed on the return leg but we all made it back, smiling.
Chris started from Campbell River and joined us along the lake, planning to do 180+ km on the day. Good on ya Chris! The route is shown here.

Denman/Hornby Islands (2016-08-05)

Denman and Hornby Islands

A group of 15 riders met at Buckley Bay for the ride on Denman and Hornby. Some rode from Courtenay, some from Union Bay and some drove to the terminal. After taking the new cable ferry, the Baynes Sound Connector, we rode across the island, via Lacon and McFarlane Rd to Gravelly Bay where we caught the ferry to Hornby. We then rode out to Whaling Station Bay for lunch after a short stop at the Shields Rd. Coop store. On the return trip the group took a few different routes, checking out some trails and other locations. Many stopped at the Cardboard House Bakery where Eamonn enjoyed a great piece of low-cal cheesecake! After this, we made our way to the 2PM ferry only to find our fearless leader, Georgina as well as Dick, were not there. After an intensive search we made the assumption that they had chosen to take an earlier ferry. The majority of the group then watched a weather system move in and rain pour down on us during our ride on Denman from ferry terminal to ferry terminal…only to stop once we reached the terminal! Total distance of the ride was a little over 50 km on the islands. Route is shown here.

Cumberland (2016-07-29)

Cumberland

A beautiful day today as a small group of 5 today travelled via some backroads up to Cumberland where the main street is under construction. A nice coffee at the Wandering Moose before our ride back down, during which Bob caused Roz to take a different route home. Both arrived safely!

Quadra Island (2016-07-27)

Quadra Island

On July 27 a group of 10 rode to Campbell River from various starting points (most from Willow Pt.) and took the ferry to Quadra Island. There they were met by Rob and Diana who graciously led a tour around the south end of the island. Lunch at the Heriot Bay Inn capped off an enjoyable hilly ride!

Fanny Bay (2016-07-22)

Fanny Bay

The ride on Friday, July 22 was deja vu all over again. Another trip to Fanny Bay. A slight variation however on the start had some of the group ride up to Marsden and Minto before dropping back down to Hwy 19A via Royston Rd. The group opted for returning to Buckley Bay for beverages rather than FBI.

Sayward (2016-07-15)

Sayward

A group of 12 riders met at the Roberts Lake Rest area for this week’s ride to Sayward. It was a beautiful day, about 20 degrees with a bit of a NW wind which we rode into on the way there. It was 32 km to the Cable House, and then another 11 km down to road to Kelsey Bay, which we did before lunch at the Cable House. On the way back we had the wind behind us most of the way, which helped us conquer the long, steady inclines on the way back to Roberts Lake shown here.  Total distance was 88 km.  Thanks to Glenn for putting this ride together and to Sheila for providing the refreshments at the completion of the ride.

Next week we are back to a local ride…to Fanny Bay…leaving at 9:30AM from the Filberg Centre.

Miracle Beach (2016-07-08)

Miracle Beach

The day dawned a little cloudy, coolish and windy but 6 hearty riders showed up at the new starting time of 9:30 for our ride to Miracle Beach. With the wind behind us we made our way up Headquarters, Howard and the old highway to the Miracle Beach cutoff, then up Williams Beach Rd to the Merville General store for coffee and treats. We then travelled down Tsolum River Rd and Headquarters back home, pushing into the wind with everyone taking their turn leading…..a little over 55 km.  The route is here.

Next week we travel to Sayward….further info will be supplied early next week.
