Englishman River Falls (2017-06-09)

Englishman River Falls
Thanks to Eamonn and Rhonda for developing, coordinating and leading and sweeping today’s new ride from Qualicum Beach to Englishman River Falls Provincial Park. We began the 50 km ride with 13 people though we ended with 14 as Wilf caught us at the Park. Forecast was cloudy with a slight chance of rain….but we did not see any of that (so I took the wrong bike!). Nice lunch at Goats on the Roof in Coombs after which we finished off with a short ride back to Qualicum Beach in the sun!

Our route is here

As well, 8 riders who chose not to travel to Qualicum Beach,  met at the Filberg Centre and travelled up Dove Creek Road to the new highway then along there to Cumberland.

Salmon Point (2017-06-02)

Salmon Point

A nice day for 23 riders (2 or 3 new faces) to make their way to Salmon Point for lunch (nice glasses Sheila!). Some went via Seaview Farms, some via the old Highway while Helen branched out of her own and did the new Highway and Hamm Road. The way back we pushed into a decent headwind so it was not quite as enjoyable! Thanks to Roz for Coordinating (and we hope Bob is feeling a little better now)  and the leads and sweeps – A Group – Steve A. and sweep Eamonn and #1 Group – Roz and Angela. We were really pleased to have our founding member Gladys Schmidt join us for lunch at Salmon Pt. Good to see you Gladys!

Next week we try a new ride from Qualicum Beach to Englishman River Falls…more details to follow.

Quadra Island (2017-05-26)

Quadra Island

A beautiful day for 24 riders who made their way to Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River and then took the water taxi across to April Point for a nice lunch. Many left from Oyster River and had a 54 km ride but others left from Merville and had a 78 km ride and Glenn and Rob left from Courtenay and Comox and did over 100 km. Thanks to Sheila for her superb Coordination of this ride, and to Glenn and Sheila for Leading and Lindsay and others for sweeping.

Buckley Bay (2017-05-19)

Buckley Bay

A much nicer day today compared to last week! 23 participants met at the Filberg Centre for this week’s “Choose a Ride”. We decided to go to Buckley Bay…..three different ways! The A group led by Bob, did the Inland Highway route; the A-1 group, led by Eamonn and Steve found a challenging route over a couple of creeks before coming down Royston, while the #1 Group made their way along the old highway. We had 3 new riders today, Lindsay, Sherry and Debbie…we hope they will join us on regular basis. Treats were had at the lower level of the Buckley Bay store before we all rode back the old highway. A pleasant ride of about 55 km. Next week we head north from Oyster River to Campbell River and take the free water taxi across to April Point for lunch…..more info to follow.

Cumberland (2017-05-12)

Cumberland

As I sit here writing this, the sun is shining and the sky is blue…..not so much the case between 10:15 and 2! We started off in dry conditions from the Filberg but part way up Dove Creek Road, it began to rain….a lot! Some took cover under some trees and waited for it to let up a bit….others continued on and attempted, unsuccessfully, to ride between the raindrops. Some missed most of the rain by doing the Lake Trail/Marsden route to Cumberland and some took a short cut back home. Eventually most of us made it to the Wandering Moose at different times….some were leaving when others arrived. After a bit of warming up inside, we ventured outside for the ride home….and it began to rain heavily again! Not one of our most enjoyable rides for the18 people who began the ride but we endured. Thanks to Bill for coordinating. Nice to see the new bike lanes on Dunsmuir in Cumberland. Hopefully the weather improves a bit for next week!

Miracle Beach (2017-05-05)

Miracle Beach

The forecast was not great but 17 people showed up to ride at the Filberg Centre. Some riders took Dove Creek to the Inland Highway and rode to Hamm Road and back down to the Old Highway. The others took Headquarters, Howard and theOld Highway to the Black Creek Store. A few stopped for ice cream at the Miniature golf course. A bit of a SE headwind on the way back but now rain and a good 55+ km ride. Thanks to Marg for coordinating.

Fanny Bay (2017-04-28)

Fanny Bay

A beautiful day for the 56km ride to Fanny Bay. 20+ riders took part, with the A group taking the Inland Highway and the #1 group taking the coastal route. All met for a nice lunch at the FBI. Thanks to Cathy for coordinating and Brenda, Georgina and many others for leading and sweeping. Next week: The Ice Cream Express!

Saratoga Beach (2017-04-21)

Saratoga Beach

A nice ride for 22 riders on what was likely the warmest day of the year. About 60 km up to Black Creek and Saratoga Beach via Seaview Farms. A few potholes but no problems. Thanks to Ed for Coordinating and leading the #1 Group and Eamonn and others for leading the A Group. Lunch at the Black Creek Store. Next week we go south to the FBI.
Route is shown here.

City/Country Loop (2017-04-14)

City Country Loop

Well, we finally had a good Friday….on Good Friday! Sunny skies and 21+ riders participated (we picked up Marg along the way) on our ride up Headquarters, to Coleman, Waveland, Eleanor, Little River and our eventual stop for lunch/treats, YQQ, the Airport. Thanks to Eamonn for stepping forward to lead.

Comox Lake (2017-03-31)

Comox Lake

A group of 21 riders met today for a cool but comfortable 45 km ride to Cumberland. Some chose to continue on to Comox Lake. Coffee and treats at the Wandering Moose. Thanks to Rob & Ed for Leading and Colleen for Sweeping. Hopefully next week we might finally get a sunny day!

Union Bay (2017-03-24)

Union Bay

A group of 8 riders showed up on a showery, blustery day for a ride down the coast to Buckley Bay. By the time we got to Royston we had blue sky but, shortly thereafter it began to rain again so we changed our plans and decided to only go to Union Bay. On our way back we met Tom & Donna who had decided to join us from their home in Royston. We then all cycled back to Royston Roasting Company for some well earned treats and drinks. When we left if had stopped raining and we had a pleasant ride home….except for the flat I got at Superstore!  Thanks to Steve for leading, Angela for sweeping and Jim for Coordinating.

City/Country Loop (2017-03-17)

St. Patrick’s Day – First Ride of the Season

Despite a questionable forecast and blustery winds, a hardy group of 10 met at the Filberg Centre for the first ride of the season.  We picked up another 3 along the way and enjoyed lunch at the Griffin Pub where many of us enjoyed the Irish stew.   Ed decided to give the “green” Blue beer a  try and will be letting us know if this impacts on the colour of his pee!  Thanks to Angus for Leading and providing mechanical help to Donna….and to Angela for sweeping.  Next week we go the other way to Buckley Bay.

Friday October 21, 2016

Last ride of the season…unfortunately cancelled again due to rain.  A good season with 26 Friday rides!
