Cumberland (2017-09-15)

Cumberland

Another nice day for 13 riders made the ride up to Inland Highway, then over to Cumberland.   The ride was not without challenge, but we had a great lunch/snack at the “Moose”! Thanks to all who joined in and a big thank-you to Steve FA for coordinating and ensuring all our members were looked after!!!

Denman/Hornby Islands (2017-09-08)

Denman and Hornby Islands

Ten riders made the 9 AM sailing from Buckley Bay to Denman  (Eamonn and Rhonda, unfortunately had some problems with a couple of flats on their way to the ferry and missed the 9 but caught the 10.  Unfortunately, they did not run into us during the day and did their full 102 km on their own.)   The weather was a bit cloudy to start with but, after conquering the first hill after getting off the ferry, things brightened up and we had a wonderful ride!  Stopped at the Co-op store on Hornby then onto Whaling Station Bay and Tribune Bay before returning to Denman and tackling the hill on East Rd that seemed to never end.  A nice downhill to the ferry and an ice cream at the Denman terminal to finish off the day!    The route we took is shown here…a bit over 50 km

The “Choose a Ride” group had 3 people had an enjoyable ride to Cumberland.

A nice day for a ride….low 20’s and sunny.  18 people met at the Filberg and 3 joined up along the way for a ride along the shore of Baynes Sound.   Some stopped at Buckley Bay while others continued to Deep Bay for lunch at the Ship and Shore.  Total distance from the Filberg was about 83 km.  Thanks to Rick and Betty for Coordinating.

City/Country Loop (2017-08-18)

City Country Loop

Another nice day in the Valley and 17 riders did a short loop (~40 km) of Headquarters, Smith, 19A, Huband, Waveland, Elinor, Wilkinson, Astra, Kilmorley, Little River and then stopped at the Airport for coffee and treats.  From there participants took a variety or routes home.  Sunday, many will be participating in the annual YANA ride.  Thanks to Jennifer who took the pictures.

Gold River (2017-08-11)

Gold River

Another smoky day in the Valley and even a little hazy at Elk Portal where our group of 9  left for our 85 km return trip to Gold River.  By the time we got to Gold River the sky was blue and temperature about 25 degrees.  A nice lunch at the Clayworks Gallery before we tackled the hill coming out of town.  Thanks to our Coordinator, Rhonda, who did a superb job of providing an after ride treat….birthday cake for Eamonn!!  He turned 36 or 93 or something like that…not too sure!  Another good ride!

The “Choose a Ride” group had 6 people and they enjoyed a ride up to Comox Lake where Steve and Bill tested the water!  Lunch at the Wandering Moose.

Next week we stay close to home with a short ride in preparation for the YANA ride next Sunday.

City/Country Loop (2017-08-04)

Qualicum Beach (2017-07-28)

Qualicum Beach

A good turnout of 20+ people (including a couple from the Victoria CCCTS)  for todays’ ride from Fanny Bay to Qualicum Beach (though Rhonda and Bob C added 30+ and 50+ km to their ride.  Rhonda even made  it more of a challenge by riding with the brakes not totally off).  A big thank-you to Steve for Coordinating and to Jane & James for their local knowledge and helpful altering of the route (though I do want to talk to you about that last hill, James!).  A nice lunch at the Courtyard Cafe.

Bella Bicicletta (2017-07-23)

Quadra Island (2017-07-21)

Quadra Island

Well, not a great day weather wise but we managed to fit 2 rides in today.  The travel group made their way up to Campbell River and caught the ferry over to Quadra where they were met by the Coordinators of the ride, Diana and Rob McKerracher.  It was a little drizzly in CR but by the time we made it to Quathiaski Cove, the sun was poking through (see picture for proof!) and most of the rest of the day was dry with a few sprinkles after lunch.  We had 6 people in Campbell River, but 2 bailed (no names mentioned, Tom &  Donna!) but, of course, after we added Diana and Rob we again had 6.  We made our way out to Cape Mudge and the Tsa Kwa Luten Resort.  From there we travelled to the other end of the island where we had a great lunch at the Heriot Bay Inn, after which we travelled back to the ferry.  Our ride, including the ride back to the Ken Forde boat ramp, was a little over 50 km.   A big thank you to Diana and Rob for their wonderful tour of Quadra island.

The other group of 5 people at the “Choose a Ride”, made their way out to Merville via Headquarters where they checked out the temporary petting zoo.  Two bailed at that point while 3 continued on to Seal Bay and home.  The group got pretty wet but had a good time.

Miracle Beach (2017-07-14)

Miracle Beach

A wonderful day for 22 riders to cycle up Dove Creek Road, the Inland Highway, Hamm Road and then enjoy some great ice cream at the Saratoga Miniature Golf course. Ride was about 55 km and is shown here .   Thanks to Glenn for coordinating and Eamonn and Ed (and others) for leading and sweeping.  Next week we do an island ride on Quadra.

Buttle Lake (2017-07-07)

Buttle Lake

A nice day today for our two rides, though a little chillier for our “northern ride” to Myra Falls on Buttle Lake, west of Campbell River where it started out cool and cloudy but cleared up nicely as the group of 9 made their way to the end of the lake. After cycling up an unenjoyable hill to the mine site, they rode back down to the mine info booth for lunch. With the wind at their back for most of the trip back, they made good time but, of course, a few km before the finish the winds turned to headwinds…which is generally the case in this area. Thanks to Rob for leading this ride and to Jennifer for providing many of the photos. On the way back to Courtenay we are hopeful Tim bought a lottery ticket as his bike had developed a nasty looking tire bulge on the way back but it lasted all the way……until he mounted the bike onto his roof rack. It was obviously a lucky day for him!

The route is shown here:

The other “Choose a ride” began at the Filberg Centre at 9:30 and 11 riders made their way up to Cumberland, and 3 continued on to Comox Lake. Cumberland was busy as there was an off road bike race. Lunch was at the Wandering Moose.

To complete the day, Len, unfortunately forgot about the earlier starting time so provided “lead” & “sweep” on his “Ice cream express” ride….the 2 scoops were tasty and well deserved!!

City/Country Loop (2017-06-30)

City Country Loop

A beautiful day for a ride! 22 riders met at the Filberg and we travelled up Headquarters, Merville Road, Coleman, Eleanor to Air Force Beach where many sampled the Gelato. Thanks to Steve for organizing and leading the # 1 group and to Eamonn, Bob and others for organizing the A Group. Next week some of us will travel to Buttle Lake while others may wish to stay in the Valley for a “Choose a ride”…more info to follow.

Willow Point (2017-06-23)

Willow Point

13 riders completed the trip to Willow Point…some left from the Filberg Centre and some from Merville.  Weather was great.  Thanks to Rob for Coordinating.

City/Country Loop (2017-06-16)

City Country Loop

We had a great ride today with our strongest turnout, so far: 30 riders with 5 newbies. Welcome! We split into three groups, which worked out well. Thanks to the leaders & sweeps and, of course, our Coordinator, Andy.  We experienced a little rain, but just enough to keep us cool – lunch at the Fly-In Cafe.

Our ride route of about 55 km is shown here
