Gold River (2016-06-24)

Gold River

A hearty group of 12 riders departed from Elk Portal in Strathcona Park west of Campbell River for an 84 km ride to and from Gold River.  Lunch was at the Clayworks Cafe and Gallery, after which we tackled the 10 km stretch of mostly uphill, but after reaching Crest Lake we had the wind behind us and a great ride back to our vehicles. It was a wonderful day for a ride as the temperature was in the high teens and, best of all, rain did NOT make an appearance!   As well, we are proud of Angela for doing some curbside recycling!

Our route is shown here.

Salmon Point (2016-06-17)

Salmon Point

A group of 22 cyclists met at Filberg Centre on another wonderful day for cycling. The #1 Group made their way out Headquarters Road and the old Highway to Salmon Point. A few kilometres from their destination, they met the A Group who had taken the Dove Creek, Inland Highway, Hamm Road route thereby adding about another 5 km to the route of 56 km which is shown here.  A big thanks to Eamonn for leading the A Group and to Barb and Georgina for leading the #1 group. A lovely lunch on the patio was enjoyed by most…except Rob whose steak came way too late and was overcooked!
Next week we are off to Gold River….further information will be shared during the week.

City/Country Loop (2016-06-10)

City Country Loop

The day dawned a little wet with a 70% chance of rain but a hearty group of 9 riders met at the Filberg Centre. Looking at the ominous clouds hovering over Cumberland, we made a decision to change our route and travelled out Headquarters to Smith, then down the old highway to Huband to Waveland, Anderton, Wilkinson, Little River and a stop at the Comox Airport for refreshments, which was about 35 km. The group then went in different directions to get home. We had a very few drops of rain during the ride. The route is shown here

Next week we ride to Salmon Point and the following week is the ever popular Gold River ride.

Willow Point (2016-06-03)

Willow Point

About 15 riders participated in today’s somewhat windy ride to Willow Point, just south of Campbell River. Some left from the Filberg Centre, while others left from Merville. A few cycled to Oyster River before making the return trip. For those who did the whole trip it was about 78 km and the route is shown here. Unfortunately, bike problems got in the way of photography, and, most unfortunately, Glenn, our superb photographer, has obtained a second yellow card due to a poor attendance record (a red card is imminent!)

City/Country Loop (2016-05-27)

City Country Loop

For our 11th ride of the season, a group of 20 rivers met for the “City Country Loop”. For the first time, the day was cloudy. We rode through Comox, Lazo Road up to Merville and back into Courtenay where many ended up at Rhodo’s for lunch. Our tour of about 55 km is shown here.  We gained about 337 metres in elevation and burned over 2000 calories in about 2 hours and 15 minutes of riding. Unfortunately, your not so intrepid reporter wimped out and, due to the 10 drops of rain that landed on his helmet, sought the comfort of his home. As a result, no final pictures…and the others, again are somewhat uninclusive! Hopefully our fearless photographer, Glenn, is able to join us next week! A big thanks to Roz and Bob for leading both groups.

Quadra Island (2016-05-20)

Quadra Island

A group on 19 riders met at Oyster River and rode into Campbell River to Painter’s Lodge where they took the water taxi across to April Point and enjoyed lunch with a beautiful view of Discovery Passage. The route (shown here) was about 55km, though a few keeners from the A group added another 11 by taking the Inland Highway back to Hamm Road, while others rode from the Merville General Store and added 24 km to the trip. The weather looked a little cloudy in the morning but, by the time we left, the sun had come out and we had another nice day! Thanks to Steve for leading, once again.

Saratoga Beach (2016-05-13)

The Ice Cream Express

Another nice turnout of 22 riders on a the 9th Friday in a row of good weather for our rides! We ventured north today up Dove Creek Road to the Inland Island Highway, then down Hamm Road. The A group did some further exploring around Saratoga Beach then met up with the #1 Group for ice cream at the Miniature Golf place near Black Creek. Thanks go Glenn and Angela for leading and organizing ….and Chris for exploring a ‘short cut’! The basic route is shown here  and was a distance of about 55 km. The A Team added another 10 km or so during their exploration.

Oyster River (2016-04-22)

Oyster River

An overcast day with a few sprinkles of rain saw 19 riders travel to Oyster River via Miracle Beach a trip of about 55 km.   Unfortunately, the Fisherman’s Pub was closed for lunch so some went to Salmon Point and others to the Black Creek General Store. Thanks to Andy for leading another successful ride.
