Ride Description:

This is a 7-day H&S based in Penticton, BC. The first day (May 26) is check-in day followed by Happy Hour at 5 pm. The following five days (May 27 - May 31) are riding days with most rides originating in Penticton. One riding day requires a short drive to Oliver. These rides are described below. The last day (June 1) is check-out day.

Accommodation Reservations:

Arrangements have been made for a block of rooms at the Bowmont Motel, 80 Riverside Dr in Penticton. Participants should phone 1-250-490-0231 to arrange their own rooms by February 28, 2017. Please specify that you are with Doug’s cycling group when you book a room. Room cost is $100 per night (excluding tax) for a room with two people sharing and an extra $25 per night for a room with three people. All rooms have a full kitchen and 1 queen in the living area and then the option for the bedroom (if needed) would be 1 queen or 2 twins. A one nights non refundable deposit is taken with the remaining nights due upon check in. The motel has an outdoor pool/hot tub with several BBQs for guests and is close to the beach and several restaurants. Please make your own arrangements for roommates once you are accepted on the H&S.

Riding Conditions:

Rides are mainly on rural roads with minimal traffic, other than short stretches on Hwy 97/3A for the longer routes. There are no unpaved sections. The H&S is rated intermediate-advanced as the terrain has some climbs with 474m-647m ascent on the shorter routes to 764m-1371m for the longer rides.

Ride maps, cue sheets, Happy Hour snacks.

Fee Does Not Include:

All meals, Happy Hour beverages.

Itinerary:

Routes on the five riding days are as follows:

  • Penticton - Naramata – (53km/69km) This ride follows the wine route along Naramata Bench to a scenic lookout at Painted Rock and then returns through the village of Naramata. The longer route will do an added circuit of Penticton.
  • Penticton – Summerland – Camp Boyle – (55km/76km) The longer route will originate in Penticton and join with the shorter route in Lower Summerland. The ride will follow the lake to Summerland and then climb through town and beyond to the Camp Boyle scout camp which is a favorite destination of local cyclists. Cyclists will then return through the vineyards and wineries along Bottleneck Drive.
  • Penticton       - Green Mountain Loop– (48km/82km)       Following Green Mountain road from Penticton towards the Apex Mountain ski resort, the shorter route will be an out and back to the Apex exit. The longer ride will include a loop that will bring the riders back to Pentiction through Kaleden.
  • Penticton – Okanagan Falls – (57km/81km) Riders will follow Skaha lake on Eastside road to Okanagan Falls. The shorter route will tour the vineyards along Oliver Ranch Road before returning to OK Falls along Hwy 97 and following Eastside Rd to Penticton (with an optional stop at Tickleberrys ice cream, of course). The longer route will climb to the White Lake Observatory and then descend back to OK Falls before returning via Eastside Road.
  • Oliver – Black Sage – (46km/73km) This ride will originate in Oliver which will require a short ½ hr carpool to the start point at the Oliver InfoCenter.       The two routes will follow the Black Sage bench and then loop back through the Golden Mile vineyards and climb to White Lake road. The shorter route will make a loop back to Oliver while the long ride will extend their loop to OK falls and then return.

 

Registration and Participant Selection:

Please register for this event using the CCCTS website for online registration, on the date shown above. A non-refundable registration fee of $25 ($Cdn) is charged.  The maximum number of participants (including day ride leaders) is 30. Participants must be current CCCTS members. 

In the event of registrations exceeding the maximum, a computer generated lottery system will be used to select the riders and waitlist. The lottery close date is shown above.  The leader also has the right to select up to 30% of the registrants as preferred candidates.

Participants will be notified by email of acceptance or wait list status.  If cancellations occur, individuals from the waiting list will be invited to join based on their position on the waiting list.
