Ride Description:

This 8-day/7-night van supported tour starts in Portland, Oregon and heads northwest to Vernonia and Astoria. From there, we head south along the coast spending two nights in Manzanita then continuing on to Pacific City. From there, we’ll head inland and cross the Coast Range, spend a night in McMinnville, then we’ll head back to Portland.

This is a motel tour with a support vehicle. The driving will be shared by the participants. The rides will vary from approximately 67 to 110 km/40 to 65 miles per day for a total of 505 km/310 miles. Detailed daily route maps and cue sheets, elevation profiles and road condition information will be provided at the commencement of the tour.

Accommodation Reservations:

We’ll be staying at 2- and 3-star hotels and the tour includes 7 nights from Saturday, Sep. 8 to Friday, Sep 14.   A few of the hotels offer a continental breakfast. Rooms will be shared by couples or same-gender singles.  Some beds may include pullout couches.  Single supplement is available at the cost of  US$471.  Restaurants are readily available for breakfasts and dinners at the overnight locations and for lunches during the rides, except where noted. Groceries are also readily available for riders wishing to carry food with them.

Riding Conditions:

The route follows all types of roads. Mostly, though, it’s rural riding on secondary highways or paved country roads. Most roads will include a paved shoulder or be of such low traffic volume to not require a shoulder. In metro Portland where we’re on somewhat busy roads, there will be bike lanes.

This is a seven-day tour with six days of riding. The terrain is rolling to fairly steep. Max grade is 8% for a very short distance while most 5% or less. The max elevation is 426m on day 2.

The support vehicle will carry baggage and may be used for emergency transportation but is not intended to be used as SAG support.

Fee Includes:

The tour fees include organization expenses, vehicle rental, hotels starting on Saturday, 9/8 until and including Friday, 9/14, and happy hour snacks. Tour leader compensation is included in the tour fee, in accordance with the latest CCCTS policy.

Fee Does Not Include:

Costs not included are transportation to and from the start and finish point nor the supply of bikes, or meals except where noted. There is parking for seven cars at Jim’s house in SW Portland and three more at the hotel, about 3 km. from the leaders house, but others may have to find alternate parking. Amtrak and Bolt Bus are options for you to consider for transport to Portland. Jim will be glad to meet your bus or train. They’re about three blocks from each other and 10 km. from the hotel. A non-profit beer and wine pool may be operated by the participants.

Itinerary:

  • Day 1, September 8; meet in Portland and stay at a hotel included with the tour. Evening group BBQ and tour initiation meeting at leader’s house nearby.
  • Day 2, the first day of riding will be mostly urban to Hillsboro then rural to Banks. From Banks to Vernonia, we’re on an abandoned rail bed mostly under a forested canopy. 67.1 km/863 m. Overnight in Vernonia.
  • Day 3 takes us on a very rural ride on quiet country roads through the forest to Astoria. Due to lack of restaurants between Vernonia and Astoria on this route, we’ll get Subway sandwiches in Vernonia and eat them at the Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area. In Astoria, we’ll climb Coxcomb Hill to see the incredible view of the Columbia River, Youngs Bay and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. 82.4 km/1,098 m. Overnight in Astoria.
  • Day 4 we start down the coast. We stay inland for the first half of the day then we hug the coast along U.S. 101 from just south of Seaside to Manzanita. We’ll pass through several state parks and the towns of  Cannon Beach and Arch Cape. 73.6 km/842 m.  Overnight in Manzanita.
  • Day 5 is a rest day in Mazanita. It’s a cute coastal town where you can relax at the beach or join us on a hike up Neahkahnie Mountain. Good local rides on inland routes are also an option. Overnight again in Manzanita.
  • Day 6 has us going around the Nehalem Bay then south through Tillamook. We’ll stop at the Tillamook ice cream factory then leave the highway to ride the Capes scenic route along the coast.  There is an optional lateral leg and climb up to the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Total: 103.9 km/1,203 m with Cape Meares and 85.3 km/613 m without). Overnight in Pacific City.
  • Day 7 we leave the beauty of the coast for the climb over the Coast Range, the lowest pass in the range. The first half will be as rural on quiet country roads as day 2 until we get to the Spirit Mountain Casino. We’ll go through the mill towns of Willamina and Sheridan on our way to McMinnville. 99.1 km/504 m. Overnight in McMinnville.
  • Day 8, the final day will involve a ride on secondary roads back to Portland by way of Sherwood, Tualatin and Tigard. The first part will be rural then urban along roads with bike lanes. 79.6 km/799 m. The tour ends with the return to the vehicles and collection of baggage in Portland.
