Location: This year’s Ottawa-organized H&S explores the foothills of the Adirondacks in northern New York State. Centered in the town of Potsdam, a 2-hour drive south of Ottawa, six days of long and short rides will explore the American side of the St. Lawrence Valley and into the foothills of the Adirondacks. Between Potsdam and the St Lawrence River are rolling farmland and forests. South of Potsdam the terrain becomes slightly more challenging and forested as we enter the foothills of the Adirondacks. The rides are on quiet paved roads and will allow time to visit churches and villages in the area dating from the 1820’s. You will have to share the road with Amish families still using the horse and buggy. On the occasions when we have to ride on highways there are wide paved shoulders marked for cyclists.
Description: Short and long rides will be offered on all days except the first, which will be a travelling day followed by a shorter ride in the afternoon. Daily cycling distances range between 35 km and 95 km. There are some hills, but generally the countryside is gently rolling so the H&S is rated as “intermediate”. Your organizing committee of Nel Ahmed, Geoff Kennedy, Don Taylor and Ed Weber exhorts you to come and join the fun, and experience some New York State hospitality!
Accommodation will be at the Moore House residence of Clarkson University (http://cometoclarkson.com), 8 Clarkson Ave, Potsdam, New York, from May 25th to May 30th (5 nights). The rates are: King Single Room, $90.00/person (single occupancy); King Couple’s Room, $100.00 per couple; Twin Bed Single Room, $75.00 per night; Twin Double Occupancy Room, $50.00/person per night. All rates include bed linens, towels, and toiletries. They also have meal packages available, e.g., dining hall breakfast at the Student Center is $6.79 per person. We have a block of 24 rooms in Moore House. For booking, call the University directly at (315) 268 6425, and mention that you are part of the CCCTS cycling group. The rooms have been blocked until March 1st. Reservations are required with one credit card only per room. Please make your own arrangements for room-mates and cost-sharing and book as soon as you get confirmation of acceptance on the H&S.
Transportation: Participants will be expected to provide their own transportation to Potsdam although we will endeavour to arrange car-pooling for those travelling from Ottawa on the 25th, arriving Potsdam mid-morning. The distance from Ottawa is about 145 km (~2.0 hours). For those arriving by air it is probably best to fly to Ottawa and car pool with us. We will be driving back to Ottawa after the rides on the 30th. Please let us know your travel plans and needs.
